Issue Assessment Project

There are numerous moral issues in society today.  These issues include everything from the use of illegal drugs and the death penalty, to immigration and child labor.   These issues affect everyone in some way, whether directly or indirectly.   Because of this, people everywhere must judge the moral implications of these issues and decide what actions they must take to rectify them.   In our Issue Assessment Project, we were asked to  focus on a real-life moral issue, research it, evaluate its moral implications, and choose what steps to take to in order to fix it.  The topic we chose for our project is the presence of sweatshops throughout the world.

Many people do not know what a sweatshop is and even if they do, it is usually a very limited definition.  A sweatshop is defined as  a “factory where workers do piecework for poor pay and are prevented from forming unions” (wordnetweb).   This definition seems comprehensive at first, but it does not touch upon the suffering of the individuals who are the victims in these situations.  In an effort to recognize these victims, we looked at our topic from a theological standpoint instead just a fact-based one.  We used numerous topics that we learned in class, such as image of God and human dignity, in order to judge these events in the light of Catholic teachings.  At the end of our project, we decided on some possible steps that both we, and the entire world, can take to rectify this terrible situation.
